Student team earns 2014 national title for efforts to enhance peoples’ livelihoods.

CALGARY, AB (April 28, 2014) – Lambton College has been named the 2014 Unilever Sustainable Living Plan Project Partnership National Champion by this country’s largest student leadership development organization, Enactus Canada, and proud supporter Unilever. The awards presentation took place at the 2014 Enactus Canada National Exposition today in Calgary.

The Enactus team from Lambton College was named National Champion because of their ability to improve people’s health and well-being, reduce environmental impact and enhance livelihoods through their One Seed project.

The Enactus team from Lambton College has transformed the rural village of Kasaka, Zambia through their innovative farming and entrepreneurship project, One Seed, which has created 41 jobs, started seven small businesses, processed 150 micro loans and generated $623,000 in economic impact. The team was able to train 230 farmers on an environmentally friendly no-till farming technique, which also encouraged solar powered water gathering methods and eliminated 366 tonnes of CO2emissions.

“Enactus helps Unilever see the future and the strategic imperatives of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan are an exciting lens through which Enactus teams bring us closer to a truly sustainable world,” said John Coyne, Vice President, Legal and External Affairs, Unilever Canada.

The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan Project Partnership was designed to recognize Enactus teams who develop and implement projects that support and align with Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan.

“Improving individual lives, as this team has done, changes entire communities,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “We are proud to partner with Unilever to recognize the Enactus Lambton team who dramatically changed the lives of 1700 people for the better.”

The Unilever Sustainable Living Plan Project Partnership National Champion was named at the 2014 Enactus Canada National Exposition, where more than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs came together to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.
