Student team earns 2014 national title for efforts to empower women to become more financially independent.

CALGARY, AB (April 28, 2014) – Lambton College has been named the 2014 Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment Project Partnership National Champion by this country’s largest student leadership development organization Enactus Canada and proud supporter Walmart. The awards presentation took place at the 2014 Enactus Canada National Exposition today in Calgary.

The Enactus team from Lambton College was named National Champion because of the positive impact they had on vulnerable women in their community through their Strength in Numbers project.

Through discussions with the Women’s Interval Home, an emergency shelter for women and children to escape domestic violence, the team discovered a gap in current support program: a lack of financial education. Enactus Lambton then developed a financial education program called Strength in Numbers, which served 93 women this year, who on average, reduced their debt by $150/month while saving an additional $50/month.

“At Walmart, we’re proud of our focus on women’s economic empowerment,” said Shelley Broader, president and CEO for Walmart Canada. “By strengthening the role of women across our business and supply chain, we will make our company stronger while improving the lives of women and children around the world.”

The Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment Project Partnership was designed to educate and empower women with the skills and confidence necessary to get a job, maintain a healthy lifestyle and obtain a voice.

“Empowering a woman, empowers her entire family as well as her community,” said Nicole Almond, Enactus Canada president. “We are proud to partner with Walmart to recognize the Enactus Lambton team who dramatically changed the lives of women and their families.”

The Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment Project Partnership National Champion was named at the 2014 Enactus Canada National Exposition, where more than 1,200 delegates including the country’s brightest university and college students, academic professionals and top Canadian CEOs came together to transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.
